Muslim culture course I arrived at the Masjid Tawhid in Leyton and stood outside the mosque for several minutes wondering whether I should enter unannounced. I entered with some hesitancy. I reflected on why I had attended the day. I had a professional interest as I work in the diversity and equality team. Added to which I had a spiritual curiosity. Were there going to be any similarities with my Catholic upbringing? The day started with the ground rules being set: respect each other and no politics. This wasn't about whether one religion was better than another. It was about finding out about another culture and religion. The brief overview covered everything from life after death to the segregation of the sexes, from the festivals in Islam to the avoidance of temptation. The major thing that I took from all the sessions is an understanding that Islam was really about peace and submission to God and the emphasis that anything that takes a person away or tempts them away from God should be avoided. The short course provides participants with the basic beliefs and practices, a visit to a Mosque, background to Muslims in Britain and public sector service development issues for Muslim communities. |
