Prevent Conference March 2010 PDF Print E-mail

How Muslims can assist on the Government’s PREVENT strategy

Date:  Tuesday 30 March 2010

Time:   09:30 to 16:30

Venue: London Muslim Centre, Whitechapel Road, London, E1 1JX

Fees:  £250 + VAT (per person)-includes Indian style lunch & refreshments (10% discount available for group bookings of five or more)

Aims:

The main aim of the conference is to highlight pertinent issues that are relevant today for Muslims in Britain, in this climate of Islamaphobia, misunderstanding and mistrust.

The focus of the day is to provide a forum for discussion to look at developing appropriate strategies that effectively respond to the Government’s PREVENT programme.

The sad events of 9/11 in the USA and more importantly 7/7 in Britain have changed people’s perception of Islam and Muslims and this has had a profound impact on the Muslim community.  Some previous Prevent projects have unfortunately not been effective due to insensitive strategies, lack of engagement and the use of  inappropriate and insensitive language when working with the Muslim community.

To win hearts and minds, secure confidence and to begin to make a difference, it is important for those rofessionals working in the public sector and who have a responsibility for Prevent, to engage and develop meaningful partnerships with Muslim communities in Britain.

This conference is a first of its kind and will enable you to gain a better understanding of Islam and Muslims in Britain.  It aims to provide you with the tools necessary to develop positive working relationships with the Muslim community.

There will be an opportunity to address questions to a panel of professional Muslim scholars.

A selection of seven workshops will be available to choose from covering key issues. (see booking form)

Prevent is one of the four strands of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy, known as CONTEST.
The Prevent strategy has five main objectives:
• To challenge the ideology behind violent extremism & support mainstream voices
• To disrupt those who promote violent extremism & support the places where they operate
• To support individuals who are vulnerable to recruitment or who have already been recruited by violent extremists
• To increase the resilience of communities to violent extremism
• To address the grievances that ideologies are exploiting.

The strategy has two supporting objectives or ‘enablers’:

• To develop supporting intelligence, analysis & information
• To improve strategic communications.
